Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Amsterdam
AmsterdamBJJ is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in Amsterdam West, led by head instructor Raoul Hiwat. We train BJJ in the Rickson Gracie line: Gi and No-Gi, sport BJJ and complete Jiu-Jitsu including self-defence.
Beginners and experienced BJJ practitioners train here side by side: 12 classes a week, including afternoon classes and open mat. The school of NOC*NSF recognised trainer/coach Raoul Hiwat is affiliated with the Rickson Gracie International Jiu-Jitsu Association, led in the Netherlands by Harold Harder.

“Jiu-Jitsu taught me to have respect for the people around me as well as respect for myself. It made me believe in my own strengths and knowledge.”

Training at AmsterdamBJJ
Gi and No-Gi, basics classes for beginners, Street BJJ/MMA, open mat, kids classes and free women self defence.
What makes AmsterdamBJJ different?
At AmsterdamBJJ we approach Jiu-Jitsu as a complete system, not purely as a competition sport. A class does not stop at scoring points on the mat.
Classes cover stand-up, grips and clinch, takedowns, ground control, positional control and submissions — in Gi and No-Gi, with attention to both self-defence and sport BJJ. This follows the Rickson Gracie approach, in which fundamentals, position and timing come first.
Raoul Hiwat
Raoul Hiwat is head instructor at AmsterdamBJJ. He has trained Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since 2000 under Harold Harder, has been teaching since 2007 and is a 3rd degree Rickson and Kron Gracie black belt.
He is a NOC*NSF nationally recognised Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu trainer/coach and has trained with Rickson Gracie several times a year since 2003.

“Jiu Jitsu is perfect. It’s humans who make errors.”
“Competition Jiu-Jitsu represents only 30% of real Jiu-Jitsu. Without the other 70%, which includes standup self-defense, defensive striking and clinching skills and an efficient vale-tudo guard, practitioners cannot develop the confidence to walk the streets knowing that they can survive a possible confrontation.”
